Film Review: Phoenix

Oh how I was looking forward to seeing you Phoenix! The reviews raved (things like: ‘one of the great films’) but…. well ….shite, the premise was so damned contrived that I came really close to turning it off. Still… review hung in my mind, that’s the one that compared it to Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo’. How? I could not see it and then finally there it was in the closing scene, revealed in all its breath taking glory – delusion (in this case by way of narcissism).

This is a film about the social brainwashing of the German people (The Nazi phenomenon) and failure of the German people to grasp (and later acknowledge) the hideousness of the compact they had entered into with Hitler. It is surreal, otherworldly and covered in layers of denial and disbelief and I have not been able to stop thinking about it and yes, I have concede that despite all my initial doubt, this film is a masterwork.
